Sand so white it almost dazzles you, a sea the colour of a lagoon, and Cape Verdean music somewhere in the air. Sal Island works all year round. Here is what we tell our clients before they go, so you get the most out of it.

1. Why Sal Island?

Sal is the Cape Verde of the postcards: 25 km of white sand coastline, turquoise water sheltered from big waves, and sunshine more than 300 days a year. It's also the easiest way into the archipelago, 5 hours by plane from Morocco, with more and more direct flights.

And for a tropical destination, the value for money is hard to beat: all-inclusive 4 and 5-star hotels at prices that are still reasonable, far from the Caribbean crowds. The mood is very laid-back, somewhere between morna music and the café terraces of Santa Maria.

2. When to go to Sal?

One of Cape Verde's big strengths is a pleasant climate all year round. It's 24 to 30°C, with the sea around 24°C. The trade winds blow almost constantly, which takes the edge off the heat and keeps the air fresh.

From November to June is the best time for swimming and kitesurfing, with the busiest period between January and April. Summer (July-October) is still very pleasant, with the odd quick shower. In winter, it's the safe choice: guaranteed sunshine while Europe shivers.

3. Where to stay on Sal Island?

The best places to stay are around Santa Maria Bay, the island's finest beach: soft sand, calm sea and a lively little village with restaurants and a seafront promenade. That's where our all-inclusive partner hotels are.

  • Santa Maria Playa: ideal for families, direct beach access and swimming pools.
  • The resort district: 4 and 5-star complexes with kids' clubs and water sports.
  • Charming villas in Espargos or Murdeira for travellers seeking peace and quiet.

Our tip: go for the all-inclusive option. Eating and drinking by the beach is fairly expensive, so you'll keep the budget under control and avoid surprises.

4. What budget should you plan for?

Cape Verde is still an affordable tropical destination, better value than many archipelagos of the same standard. There are several options: a one-week all-inclusive stay, a version with excursions, or a 5-star resort. The details and exact price of each package are on the stay page.

On the island, euros are widely accepted, but the local currency is the Cape Verdean escudo (1 € ≈ 110 CVE). Carry some cash for small shops and tips.

5. Activities not to be missed

  • Kitesurfing and windsurfing: Sal is one of the most famous spots in the world, with spots for every level.
  • Santa Maria beach: 8 km of white sand, perfect for walking at sunset.
  • The Pedra de Lume salt pans: bathe in an old volcanic crater, floating as in the Dead Sea.
  • Diving with turtles in Palmeira, and a boat trip to the caves of Buracona.
  • Cape Verdean music: catch a morna or funaná concert at a bar in Santa Maria.

6. Our expert tips

Formalities

Moroccan nationals don't need a visa for a tourist stay of under 30 days. You just need a passport valid 6 months after the return date.

Money

Bring cash in euros: ATMs are rare outside Santa Maria and cards aren't accepted everywhere.

Sun protection

The sun is strong in Cape Verde, even in winter. High-factor sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water are a must, especially for water sports.
